Agentic accounting

What an accounting agent should be allowed to do

A practical boundary for agents that investigate records, prepare accounting work, and carry out approved changes.

An answer is not the same as accounting work

A chat interface can explain a transaction or summarize a report. An accounting agent has to do more. It needs authorized access to the relevant books, tools that understand accounting objects, and a controlled way to move from investigation to action.

The useful boundary is not read-only versus autonomous. It is whether each operation has the evidence, authorization, and approval appropriate to its consequence.

Let the agent investigate and prepare

Agents should be able to search authorized activity, inspect reports and source status, identify exceptions, and prepare a proposed treatment. That removes repetitive preparation without hiding the accounting judgment from the reviewer.

The proposal should name the entity, period, basis, records, and expected accounting impact. A reviewer should not have to reconstruct what the agent saw before deciding.

Put control at the point of change

Material changes should pass through the approval required for that operation. Approval is not a generic checkbox given once to an assistant. It is a current decision tied to a defined proposal, authorized scope, and responsible person.

After application, the system should preserve who prepared the work, who approved it, what changed, and which evidence supported the result. That is what turns agent activity into accountable accounting work.
