A balanced trial balance is not a finished close
Equal debits and credits are necessary. They do not prove that every source, estimate, exception, and review step is complete.
Balanced answers one question
A trial balance with equal debits and credits shows that the ledger is mathematically balanced. It does not show that all required documents and supported bank activity were brought in through import or sync, every exception was resolved, every estimate was recorded, or every account was reviewed.
That distinction matters because a clean-looking total can create false confidence when the underlying period is incomplete.
Readiness needs evidence
A useful close view separates source movement, accounting review, reconciliation, and final reporting. Each status should say what was checked and what remains open rather than collapsing the entire period into one green indicator.
When a reviewer opens a status, the source records, exceptions, and ledger activity behind it should remain available. Readiness should be inspectable, not inferred from presentation.
Automate the check, review the correction
Categoric’s import review automatically checks supplied opening and closing balances against transaction activity. It can highlight likely single-row or paired type and direction errors, so the reviewer has a more useful starting point than the difference alone.
Inspect the original transaction, choose a supported type fix if it is appropriate, and recheck the recalculated balance. A suggestion is not a confirmed cause, and a possible missing transaction is a hypothesis—not a recovered record. Some discrepancies still need further investigation.
Separate matching tools can link some high-confidence transfers, checks and receipts automatically. Those links support review; they do not establish statement balance or finalize the month. Finalization remains a user decision, not an automatic consequence of a green total.
Use precise language
Balanced can mean that source and calculated movement agree, or that total debits equal total credits. Ready can mean that a defined review gate has passed. Closed should mean that the organization’s required close work is complete.
Keeping those terms distinct makes the system more useful to owners, operators, and accountants—and gives agents clearer conditions to evaluate.
